UWOC-Toronto Food Drive
During the month of October our Branch generally holds our annual Pot-Luck Dinner and Food Drive. Pre-Covid we looked forward to members bringing a ‘small dish’ of their choice to share with everyone who was in attendance. A list of what to bring was never pre-arranged and we had the best buffet going from soup to nuts! Our members and guests shared a meal together in good friendship and if lucky exchanged recipes.
But it was also a time to reflect upon those who struggle with food insecurities. For the past 10 years or so we have asked everyone to bring in non-perishable food items which would be donated to the Daily Bread Food Bank. Our Executive at the time believed we needed to support the organizations and agencies not only in Ukraine but within our neighbourhood which supported women, children, the poor, the sick and the homeless.
Due to the Covid-19 restrictions we were unable to host the dinner this year. However, it did not prevent us from asking for non-perishable food donations to support the Daily Bread Food Bank. Our donations will be quarantined for a few days before they are dispersed.
Last year we donated a total of 372 pounds of non-perishable food items. As you can see by some of the pictures our haul was bigger, and the boxes were loaded down with canned goods.
We are most proud to announce we raised and donated a total of 2005 pounds of food! Our sincere thank you to our members and supporters for their most generous contributions. Not sure how we will top this off next year, but we have a challenge and UWOC-Toronto ‘will not back down’ from trying.
