UNF President, Renata Roman, recently spoke with Oksana Kyzyma, attaché of cultural affairs at the Ukrainian Embassy to Canada, about the upcoming animated film “Мавка”. The interview is also available below in Ukrainian.
1. How did the “Мавка” project get started?
The idea of creating a film based on the works of Lesia Ukrainka was that of the Анімаград studio, which is affiliated with the Ukrainian film company Film.UA.
Work on the animated film began back in 2015. Since that time, the project has been presented at many professional international forums, in particular at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in the fall of last year.
2. Can you provide us with an overview of the film?
The animated film is based on the extraordinary drama “Лісова пісня”, which was written by Lesia Ukrainka in 1911. This drama is one of the first works of fantasy in Ukrainian literature.
The creators used Ukrainian traditions, mythology and legends to draw from as inspiration for the film.
It is a story about the magical power of love. The primary heroine, the mythical Мавка, is faced with the difficult decision of choosing between love and her responsibilities of guarding the forest, when she falls in love with a talented human musician, Лукаш.
In the animated film, as described by the filmmakers, there is a happy ending.
3. When will audiences in Canada and Ukraine be able to view the film?
As was revealed in the recently released teaser-trailer, which was presented during the celebration of the 150 year anniversary of Lesia Ukrainka’s birthday, the film will be released in 2022. The exact date will be announced in the second half of this year. At that time, the full trailer will also be made available.
4. Why will this film be culturally and historically significant?
Animation is a universal language, which can be understood worldwide. It is through this creative medium that the films creators aim to teach the audience about Ukraine, its culture, traditions, visual arts and music.
Ancient rituals, myths and legends play an important role in accurately conveying the folkloric and ethnographic aspects of the project.
Another important goal of the project is to raise awareness of ecological issues, in particular the increasing disappearance of various species of flora and fauna from the Red Data Book of Ukraine and the felling of Ukrainian forests.
In the film, audiences will also see a number of real Ukrainian geographic locations, such as the forests of the Carpathians and the Buky Canyon.
This project provides a fresh and modern look at the work of Lesia Ukrainka, who was responsible for popularizing Ukraine to a global audience during her era.
Projects such as “Мавка. Лісова пісня” are very inspiring. At the Embassy, we are always happy to promote the works of Ukrainian cinematography, an evolving industry. We hope that the agreement between Ukraine and Canada, about cooperation on the development of audiovisual works, which came into effect this year, will provide opportunities for future collaboration on new and exciting film projects.

The teaser-trailer premiered in Canada on February 27th during an online webinar celebrating the 150th anniversary of Lesia Ukrainka’s birthday. The trailer can be viewed on the Embassy Facebook page.

Ідея втілити геніальний твір Лесі України належить команді студії Анімаград, яка є частиною української кінокомпанії Film.UA.
Робота над анімаційною стрічкою розпочалася ще в 2015 році. Відтоді проєкт був презентований на багатьох професійних світових форумах, зокрема і на Міжнародному кінофестивалі в Торонто (TIFF) восени минулого року.
2. Прошу коротко описати зміст Фільму.
Мультфільм засновано на драмі-феєрії “Лісова пісня”, яку написала Леся Українка в 1911 році. Цей твір є одним з перших прообразів фентезі в українській літературі.
Творці мультфільму надихалися також українськими традиціями, міфами та легендами.
Це історія про магічну силу кохання. Головна героїня — міфічна істота Мавка — стикається з важким вибором між коханням та своїм обов’язком оберігати ліс, коли закохується в людину — талановитого молодого музику Лукаша.
У мультфільмі, як розповідають його автори, буде happy end.
3. Коли громадяни в Украіні і Діяспорі можуть побачити цей фільм?
Як ми можемо бачити з нового тизер-трейлеру, який присвячено 150-річчю з дня народження Лесі Українки, фільм має вийти в прокат 2022 року. Конкретну дату планують оголосити в другій половині цього року. Тоді ж очікується повноцінний трейлер мультфільму.
4. Чому цей фільм буде культурно і історично важний ?
Анімація є універсальною мовою, яку розуміє увесь світ. І саме цією мовою творці стрічки прагнуть розповісти про Україну, про її культуру, традиції, візуальне мистецтво, музику.
Важливо, що давні українські обряди, міфи та легенди допомагають якнайточніше передати залучені до проєкту фольклористи та етнографи.
Іншою важливою місією проєкту є привернути увагу до екологічних проблем, а саме до зникнення все більшого числа представників української флори та фауни, занесених до Червоної Книги України, а також вирубки українських пралісів.
У мультфільмі також можна буде побачити реальні українські географічні локації — такі культурні та туристичні атракції, як ліси Карпат, село Вилкове та Буцький каньйон.
Цей проєкт дозволяє по-новому подивитися на творчість Лесі Українки, яка свого часу популяризувала Україну на весь світ.
Такі проєкти як мультфільм “Мавка. Лісова пісня” дуже надихають. Ми в Посольстві завжди раді промотувати найкращі роботи українського кінематографа, який активно розвивається. І очікуємо, що зокрема угода про спільне виробництво аудіовізуальних творів між Україною та Канадою, яка набула чинності з початку цього року, сприятиме появі нових цікавих кінопроєктів.
