Ukrainian Women’s Organization of Canada launches its 90th Anniversary
The Ukrainian Women’s Organization of Canada – UWOC (patroness – Olha Basarab), one of the first Ukrainian community organizations in Canada, was founded in 1930 by groups of young women affiliated with the Ukrainian War Veterans Association of Canada (UWVA). In 1932, UWOC became an independent affiliate organization within the system of the Ukrainian National Federation of Canada (UNF). Branches of UWOC were formed across the country. In 1934, during the first National Convention of the UNF of Canada, held in Saskatoon, Sask., the official name of the Ukrainian Women’s Organization was adopted, and а Central Executive was established, bestowing honourary patronage upon Olha Basarab, а leading heroine of Ukraine.
Over the course of its history, the organization’s headquarters have been located in Saskatoon, Winnipeg and, in more recent years, Toronto. The UWOC is a member of the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations, The National Council of Women of Canada, as well as other national and international women’s associations.
The UWOC reached its 90th year in 2020, but, owing to the world-wide coronavirus pandemic, was forced to postpone its celebrations to a later time. That time has now come, and the organization is proud to announce that a host of special events (engaging seminars, workshops, and other festivities) are planned for 2022 throughout the country, culminating in a jubilee gala to take place in Toronto on October 15, 2022. The organization is also excited to unveil its official 90th Anniversary logo, which will be featured on all anniversary communications and commemorative items.

The Ukrainian Women’s Organization of Canada (UWOC) 90th Anniversary logo represents the organization’s vibrant history. The gold colour symbolizes the golden wheat of the Canadian prairies, as well as Ukraine’s vast steppes. The beautiful floral arrangement in the centre is reminiscent of the traditional Ukrainian Petrykivka decorative art form, which started around the 18th century in the village of Petrykivka, Dnipro oblast, and now has UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage designation.
Thank you to Anna Harasym, the graphic artist who created this design. She, along with UWOC National Board members and 90th Anniversary Committee members, worked on this design to come up with something unique and reflective of UWOC’s rich legacy.

Організація Українок Канади (ОУК) розпочинає святкування свого 90 ювілею
Організація Українок Канади (ОУК) ім. Ольги Басараб, одна з перших українських громадських організацій у Канаді, була заснована у 1930 році гуртками молодих жінок, пов’язаними з Українською Стрілецькою Громадою Канади (УСГ). У 1932 році ОУК стала незалежною братньою організацією в системі Українського Національного Об`єднання Канади (УНО). Згодом, по всій країні були створені відділи ОУК. У 1934 р. під час першого Крайового З’їзду УНО Канади, що відбувся в Саскатуні, в провінції Саскаеван, було прийнято офіційну назву Організації Українок Канади та створено Центральну Управу, яка призначила патронкою ОУК Ольгу Басараб, славну героїню України.
Упродовж своєї історії штаб-квартира організації знаходилася в Саскатуні, Вінніпегу, а в останні роки, в Торонто. ОУК є членом Світової федерації українських жіночих організацій, Національної ради жінок Канади, а також інших національних та міжнародних жіночих асоціацій.
У 2020 році ОУК виповнилося 90 років, але через всесвітню пандемію коронавірусу організація була змушена перенести свої святкування на пізніше. Ця пора вже настала і організація з гордістю повідомляє, що на 2022 рік по всій країні заплановано низку спеціальних заходів (семінарів, майстерок та інших подій), кульмінацією яких стане ювілейне ґала-святкування, яке відбудеться в Торонто 15 жовтня 2022 р. Організація також рада представити свій офіційний ювілейний логотип, який буде розміщуватися на всіх офіційних повідомленнях та пам’яткових предметах.
Незабаром ми поділимося детальною інформацією про наші ювілейні плани та з нетерпінням чекаємо вітати вас на наших урочистостях по всій Канаді протягом наступного року.
Логотип 90-річчя Організації Українок Канади (ОУК) представляє її яскраву історію. Золотий колір символізує золоту пшеницю канадських прерій, а також просторі степи України. Красива квіткова композиція в центрі нагадує традиційне українське петриківське декоративне мистецтво, яке зародилося приблизно у 18 столітті в селі Петриківка Дніпровської області, а тепер внесено до списку нематеріальної культурної спадщини ЮНЕСКО.
Дякуємо графічній художниці, пані Анні Гарасим, яка створила цей дизайн. Вона, разом із членкинями Крайової Управи ОУК та оргкомітету 90-річчя, працювали над цим дизайном, щоб створити щось унікальне, що відображає багату спадщину ОУК.
