Branch wanted to make sure that we hang on to a few of
our most important traditions. With the pandemic
restricting over night children’s camps a heart wrenching decision was
made not to run the children’s camp for 2020. In its 60-year history the
camp had always operated a children’s camp until now.
The Executive still wished to see our Children’s Camp through 2020. So, a
fun ‘Golf Day’ for 30 golfers at Shanty Bay was arranged followed by a
barbeque Steak Dinner back at Camp Sokil.
In less than 12 hours the 30 spots were taken to the dismay of others.
Given the criteria from the Provincial Government, Public Health Advisors,
Simcoe-Muskoka District and Shanty Bay’s Board of Directors 30 golfers
with a starting time of 9 am with foursomes going out every 8 minutes was
the norm this year.
The golfers were required to wear a mask going into the club house. The
patio was limited to 30% occupancy. We were not able to hold our annual
golf tournament which saw 80 plus golfers attending. No shot gun start, no
fanfare, no banquet where trophies and prizes were handed out.
Once the golfers finished their game, they were not able to linger around
the golf club. Slowly they arrived back to Camp Sokil. Some were able to
go and have a swim before coming to see the newly renovated camp
kitchen named in honour of Michael Rebryk. We gathered behind the
kitchen keeping in mind social distancing rules and maintained our social
bubbles while seated at the picnic tables. A total of 40 golfers and guests
joined us for a barbeque steak dinner. Shanty Bay Golf Club donated a
round of golf for 4 people. Raffle tickets were given to those attending the
dinner. The winning ticket belonged to Lesia Hnatejko.
For the past number of years proceeds from the annual Golf Tournament
went towards purchasing and erecting a new children’s playground. And
once again, our sponsors stepped up. We had surpassed our goal and
plans are underway to start with design and layout.
Our Golf Tournaments/Golf Day would not be a great success without the
participation of our dedicated golfers, Hole Sponsors and Supporters.
